The Chester Cycle Road to Emmaus
PRESENTED BY: Redeemer University College’s Theatre Arts Department
DIRECTOR/PRODUCER: Sharon Klassen
SYNOPSIS: This little play presents three of the encounters between the risen Christ and his followers in the days just after the Resurrection. With the humour, warmth and simplicity of the Chester Cycle, this play recreates stories from Luke 24 and John 20. Jesus’s disciples walk with him, eat with him, feel his body and his wounds, and listen as he explains away their fears.
COMPANY BIOGRAPHY: The Redeemer University College Theatre Arts Department is a small but effective program nestled into the broad liberal arts setting of this Christian liberal arts institution, which means that our students develop big picture thinking alongside their artistic visioning and work. We craft theatre for in-class projects, as well as for two mainstage plays every year for the public. Ours is the only program like it west of Edmonton. It trains artists for working lives in the city and the country; in schools, communities and theatres. Our graduates have earned praise in the artistic and educational community. We are innovators, and we are people of faith.
DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY: Sharon Klassen teaches in the Theatre Arts Department at Redeemer University College, splitting her time between production work and teaching everything from Theatre History and Dramatic Literature to Public Speaking and Stage and Production Management. She studied Journalism and English at Carleton University before attending the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama at the University of Toronto. She directed “The Road to Emmaus” as part of the staging of the Chester Cycle in 2010. At Redeemer, she produces most mainstage plays, and has designed sets most recently for Love’s Labour’s Lost, Harvey and Hecuba. She has also designed at the U of T and for Shadowlight Theatre Company. Her research interests include Victorian and Edwardian Drama, the relationship between text, theatre history and performance, and using storytelling to promote literacy.
